Our Lodge & Our Fund

A hundred and nineteen years of meeting on the first Tuesday, and forty-one years of sending students to school.

The lodge

A small hall on Ashlar Avenue

Real Fake Lodge No. 1234 received its charter in 1907 and has met in the same brick hall since 1961, when the membership built it themselves over two summers. Today the lodge counts just under two hundred members, roughly sixty of whom you will find at any given stated meeting, arguing amiably about the price of coffee.

The lodge’s public work is straightforward: a scholarship fund, a food pantry partnership, and a hall that any local nonprofit may use free of charge. The private work is older and quieter, and we are glad to talk about it with anyone who asks.

The fund

Forty-one years, one hat

The scholarship fund began in 1985 with $412 collected in a hat at a Friday fish fry and a single award to a senior headed for community college. Since then the lodge has awarded 214 scholarships totaling just over $390,000.

Awards go to graduating seniors from our four neighboring districts who are pursuing music, the visual and performing arts, or a skilled trade. Applications open in January, a committee of members and two local educators reads every one, and awards are paid directly to the school. Recipients are honored at the April stated meeting, where they are fed considerably more brisket than any one person should eat.
